I just love banks, don't you? They go out of their way to make life exciting and to make sure we are always wondering if our account will have been emptied by tomorrow morning. They spend a fortune launching `Chip & Pin' and trying to convince us that it is infallible and that any fraud on our card in future will be due to our failings, not theirs. They do us great favours like deciding, unilaterally, to get rid of cheques. They are so good to us I thought we should reward them with a thread devoted to their marvellous escapades. Let me start with this offering but please add your own experiences and comments...
We have received a letter from Santander (Abbey Nat to you and me) beginning "We are deligted to inform you..." which always sets alarm bells ringing, and ends "As Santander we will continue to offer innovative, great value products and are committed to delivering excellent service to our customers" which sets the sirens blaring. What they are delighted to inform me is that they have upgraded (without consulting me) my Cheque Guarantee Card to a Visa Debit Card. But I don't want a Visa debit card, I don't need another card, it's just another thing to get stolen, lost or defrauded.
But there's a sting in the tail. They then tell me to destroy my cheque guarantee card by cutting it in half. OK, I think, the new card will be used for this instead. But no, lower down in the letter it says the new card cannot be used to guarantee cheques. I know that cheques are set to be phased out (unilaterally once again, by June 2011) but it looks like the banks have devised a great scam to deprive us of cheque guarantee cards so they can say that cheques are not much use. I use cheques a lot and I would prefer that they were not phased out, but then, hey, the banks are not there just for you and me, are they?
I notice that although the letter tells me to destroy the cheque card, nowhere does it say that I cannot continue to use it. So I'm going to use it for as long as possible. I advise everyone to do the same. The banks are just hoping we will all fall in line with their demands and destroy the cards immediately.

Am I the only one who is getting bored with this constant sniping and points scoring against each other? You both have points to make, but neither is ever going to convet the other, and neither is right all the time. Just make your point and let us grown ups decide who to agree with. (Or should that be whom?) .

I think they should meet up for a beer or two at a location mid way between the two residences and we should all stay clear

I agree with Tripps, especially since I started this thread and it's supposed to be about banks and their services and products. Frank and Stanley get started on an argument and are each determined to have the last word and it gets boring. It's no longer debate, it's argument and competition for who can be last left standing. We should have a (padded) thread called `Frank & Stanley' and let them get on with it there but nowhere else!

I hope i haven't made things worse, it is annoying Tizer, when you start a topic and people divert it to serve their own argumentative ends, it has happened to me on nearly every topic I've started, it's about power I suppose but I was just thinking the other day, this whole site used to have it's focus on "living history" ie that the topics being posted about would be of historical interest t those reading them after we have long gone, I don't think this constant arguing serves that purpose, but perhaps a History based site is not the best place for those who don't see any use for history, to use get their points accross.

OK I seem to be so out of touch it's probably time to leave this topic. But don't be fooled the Banks are the biggest Political Issue facing the country today. We would all be a lot poorer without them !!! .

Belle, that comment seems aimed at Frank but it takes two (at least) to have an argument. Frank should be able to say he disagrees without it always being turned into a never ending fight by both sides.

I'm not going on the Naughty Step for making a straight forward complementary remark , which I meant .....
Meanwhile, back with the Banks .......a "System Error" resulted in Santander billing me twice as much as usual last month for my PayPal account....I got that answer when I called them to complain (at my own cost).
I made the correct payment (as advised) but have subsequently been bombarded with telephone calls asking for the extra amount....
I have now recieved a letter telling me of the "Error" and an apology (of sorts)....adding that a new account has been opened , that I may not use my existing card , that I must register my new card when it finally arrives and that of course I have to got through all existing "arrangements" and change the account number MYSELF !
To add insult to injury I recieved yet another automated call not 10 minutes ago .......
Time to move on...Sorry Jose , you blew it !

Tizer just to answer your comment to me, I don't have a problem with anyone not agreeing with other peoples views it's just as I said, this site was set up by certain people for a reason, perhaps i have misunderstood it? I have not mentioned anyone by name,so please don't cause trouble on my behalf! What I have said is it seems provocative and tedious, to keep manoeuvering every topic back to a personal debate which seems to have no bearing on leaving a historical record behind of how things were for those of us living in 2011. There is a place for differing politcal views to be aired, but it should be contained to one topic, (not the first time this has been mooted).

I take your point, it's boring me as well. I shall simply report the history and leave you to judge how pertinent it is.We all have opinions and are allowed to voice them and I admit that Frank to me is a red rag to a bull. I shall ignore him and carry on as before.
I haven't written the letter to the bank yet asking why they put additional charges on an account that's in credit. I'm waitng till all the dust has settled. Listened to the Money Programme on Saturday and was amazed to hear some of the rules the credit card companie have that penalise people trying to pay money into their accounts.

I refuse to use 0845 and/or 0870 numbers and have withdrawn any investments with the establishments that have introduced them, where I have been unable to use a 01/02 number by use of the SAY NO to 0870 numbers site. I now find that one of the last building societies to hold out has now joined the throng and I'm about to give them a piece of my mind. I know I'm probably flogging a dead horse with my opposition but, particularly in today's low interest situation, any revenue from interest will be nearly swallowed up by the cost of the call, particularly when you have to listen to some of the tripe given out before you arrive at the desk you want. Has anyone on One Guy any sympathy with my views or am I just a `Tight Tyke crying in the Wilderness' ?

Much Sympathy here Ted....I think it's outrageous that we should pay through the nose to call any "business" , for whatever reason....
There is no logic to it , other than it being one more way of generating "income" for them . (I'm assuming they get a "cut")

Particularly when they have you on hold but telling you that "your call is valuable to us, please continue to hold". If you are that valuable they should be paying for the call.
